West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation Ltd. (Webel) was incorporated in 1974 with an objective of developing electronics industry in the State of West Bengal. The corporation through its subsidiary companies was in the business of manufacturing various electronic components & equipment. With a quiet revolution taking place in West Bengal, Information Technology and IT Enabled Services (ITeS) Industry penetrated its roots firmly in line with the State Governments vision to position West Bengal as one of the top three IT states in the country by 2010 and contribute 15 percent of the countrys IT revenue. In ITeS the state in targeting 20% share of the BPO revenue. Webel quietly broadened its activities from electronics to Information Technology and is now also the nodal agency for IT & ITeS of the Government of West Bengal. Webels role was to attract knowledge based industries on a global scale and also to facilitate e-governance for the entire state of West Bengal. Webels prime task however, is now to create world class infrastructure and facilities, encourage entrepreneurship and establish institutions that produce quality manpower more in numbers & would spearhead the future. Webel has successfully implemented a number of e-governance projects not only in West Bengal but also for some other neighboring states. West Bengal State Wide Area Network (WBSWAN) that connect all district head quarters, the block level and the gram panchayat; Internet Bandwidth, IT education in schools are a few to name. Webel has implemented the first of its kind in the country, connecting all 411 Police Stations of West Bengal and a series of applications run on the network such as criminal tracking system, application which permit messaging and access to data at grass-root levels to tract crime. Webel through its IT Education and Training arm, Webel Informatics Ltd. (WIL) conducts various courses in software, hardware with networking & multimedia, besides a host of other IT courses for beginners, BPO Employability Test and Voice-Language Training and awards CISCO Certified Network Associate. Webel in collaboration with IIT, Kharagpur has developed, installed and commissioned Telemedicine facilities using ISDN, leased line and PSTN communication links and it is running successfully at different referral and nodal centers in West Bengal and Tripura Govt. hospitals which are providing health care to the population in different areas of the two states. This project is like to expand very soon in other areas also. Webel has developed Computerized Braille Transcription System for Disabled and visually handicapped for reading and writing in English and in another twelve Indian languages. Webel through its One stop solution from Webel Mediatronics Ltd. (WML) offers Community Radio System (CRS) which is a complete Broadcasting Station built around CRS-50 Transmitters. To leverage the inherent creating talent in the State, Webel has set up an Animation Academy to develop skilled people.
