The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) were created by the Indian Government with the aim of identifying the brightest intellectual talent available in the student community of India and training it in the best management techniques available in the world, to ultimately create a pool of elite managers to manage and lead the various sections of the Indian economy. IIMs play a leading role in the nation’s managerial manpower development in addition to carrying out research in emerging areas. These Institutes are recognized as premier management institutions, comparable to the best in the world for teaching, research and interaction with industries. As role models for other Indian B-Schools, they have shared knowledge and skills to improve the quality and standards of management education in India. In 2009, the Indian government decided to start six new IIMs including IIM Udaipur. IIM U started its PGP programme with 58 students in a temporary campus located at Polymer Science Building, Mohanlal Sukhadia University (MLSU), Udaipur. The new campus for IIM Udaipur will come up in 253 acres of land in the Balicha area of Udaipur, Rajasthan which have been allocated by the Government of Rajasthan for the this purpose. Shri C.K.Birla, the Chairman of Hindustan Motors Ltd. India, was appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Governors for IIM Udaipur while Prof. Janat Shah, formerly with IIM Bangalore, was appointed as the Institute’s Director. Over the next few years, apart from offering Post Graduate Programme, the Institute would also offer Doctoral Programme, executive training programmes, and faculty development programmes. Admission to the PGP course at IIM Udaipur is very competitive and is through the Common Admission Test (CAT). The PGP course consists of six terms covered spread over two years. The admissions for the first batch of students has been completed through its mentor institute IIM Indore.
